Sunday of the Resurrection A
A butterfly is a terrible thing to waste
Text: Isaiah 52.13-15
See, my servant shall prosper;
he shall be exalted and lifted up,
and shall be very high.
Just as there were many who were astonished at him
—so marred was his appearance, beyond human semblance,
and his form beyond that of mortals—
so he shall startle many nations;
kings shall shut their mouths because of him;
for that which had not been told them they shall see,
and that which they had not heard they shall contemplate.
Matthew 27.62-28.10
NRSV 62 The next day, that is, after the Day of Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate 63and said, ‘Sir, we remember what that impostor said while he was still alive, “After three days I will rise again.” 64Therefore command that the tomb be made secure until the third day; otherwise his disciples may go and steal him away, and tell the people, “He has been raised from the dead”, and the last deception would be worse than the first.’ 65Pilate said to them, ‘You have a guard of soldiers; go, make it as secure as you can.’ 66So they went with the guard and made the tomb secure by sealing the stone.
28
After the sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. 2And suddenly there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord, descending from heaven, came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. 4For fear of him the guards shook and became like dead men. 5But the angel said to the women, ‘Do not be afraid; I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. 6He is not here; for he has been raised, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. 7Then go quickly and tell his disciples, “He has been raised from the dead, and indeed he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him.” This is my message for you.’ 8So they left the tomb quickly with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9Suddenly Jesus met them and said, ‘Greetings!’ And they came to him, took hold of his feet, and worshipped him. 10Then Jesus said to them, ‘Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.’
I know at least one person noticed the cocoon that we had on the branches here. Of all all the symbols of Easter, rabbits and eggs, and candy, pastel colours and marshmallow peeps. Butterflies really DO have a Christian meaning. They are the symbol of Christ resurrection. What can be more perfect way of experiencing transformational from death to life that going from a Lazarus-wrapped worm, sealed in a pod, months long dead time, to something so intensely beautiful and so fully alive that it takes wing into the sky and go anywhere it wills?
There are so so many kinds of death; literal physical death of course, but there is also death to hope, dead-end jobs, failed relationships, bankruptcy and financial collapse, physical and mental disabilities . We get so discouraged and overwhelmed that it’s sometimes feels just easier to give up rather than endure the pain of trying some more.
And sometimes we just stop in our tracks and we wait, and we build our own coffins and just lay down and let the lid slide on. And we wait there sometimes a little while, sometimes years, waiting for someone to bury us or maybe to rescue us.
But God is not done with us yet. Even in those days when we can’t see the way forward, stuck and desperate and miserable God has not abandoned us. The experiences we have in our dead zones are the essence of transformation in all it’s messy, wet, sticky, smelly happening-ness. After all you can’t get a chick without scrambling the inside of the egg can you?
But what’s the difference between scrambled egg and a new fuzzy chick? It is the movement of God and of life, in ways that are anything but random. That God is not done with us , we have the proof of that in both little and big ways. The little ways are the things that happen to us while we’re waiting there to die whatever kind of doom that’s pressing down on us. A random act of kindness, a good test result from the doctor. A check that inexplicably arrives in the mail, in interview when we least expected it. Maybe even just a particularly good slice of toast on a nasty, no good, rotten completely horrible day.
Those are some little ways. The big way is Christ’s resurrection, that we celebrate today. It is the sign and signal, portent and promise that “‘it’ does happen”. I’m not a blind fool, and yes there is so much reason to doubt the truth of Easter madness, but here’s why I believe. These disciples were transformed. They went from being bumbling idiots who could’nt blow their noses without asking Jesus about it and running helter skelter from the authorities at Jesus arrest to being completely different creatures, people who muscled their way into the temple, the very most dangerous place on the planet for them-- to bellow the truth about Jesus at the top of their lungs. Peter in particular was really scared just three days before, and he went from being crushed by guilt and fear to leading believers for almost 30 years in Jerusalem, Syria and Rome before he finally willingly gave up his life in a very public, painful and messy death in an arena in Rome.
And every single one of the disciples did the same. As far as I can determine, not one of the believers, women and men died of natural causes. The only exception may be Jesus mother who seems to have died in Ephesus in Turkey at a very advanced age many years later according to early church tradition. The believers, men and women, put their lives on the line for years and years. THAT is transformation.
Why the heck would you do any of that, even for a short while, if you had made up a lie about a dead criminal coming back to life again...a prediction of Jesus that the disciples repeatedly ignored, though the Jewish elders were quicker on the uptake as we heard from the gospel reading this morning.
But there’s a little more to it than that. If you read the gospel account closely, the temple guards saw the angel themselves and fainted right there themselves, then the women turned and found Jesus waiting for them. In each of the resurrection accounts the things the witnesses disagree on. In this morning’s account the women grasp Jesus feet. But in John’s account Jesus refuses to let them come close. In Matthews account there are guards, but no other gospel writer tells that story. But every single one of them agrees that Jesus was raised.
So there is this big egg, this big cocoon, this big event in history that is telling you that what you see and believe about your life and your death, ain’t necessarily so. Another interesting thing about cocoons and butterflies is that butterflies can not make it out of the cocoon with out a tremendous struggle. They are so weak that they are only capable of making the tiniest of holes in the chrysalis, and through this hole they absolutely must force themselves, even though it takes hours. It turns out that if we helpful humans make the hole bigger so the butterfly can get out, the butterfly will crawl out a crumpled mess, wander feebly for a little bit then really die for good. It turns out, that by forcing itself through that tiny hole, that it is squeezing the fluid of life from it’s body into the capillaries and veins of the wings to the very tips of it’s wide, complicated body.
Hmm...so maybe the oozy, weepy stuff in our lives DOES have value after all. This week, I’d like to invite you to wear this butterfly, or put it somewhere you will see it often. When you see it, or touch it; meditate on what resurrection means to you. Just because spring is here, and Easter has happened, doesn’t mean that magically your life is going to change, but the squeezing of life into your body IS happening, even if it is at a glacial pace-- even on days when the chemo is awful, when the mail brings multiple rejection notices, when the mirror and your own dead-zone tell you you are unlovely and unlovable, when you tell your aunt with Alzheimer's your name for the 5th time that day, when some co-worker dumps on you...In everything, resurrection is happening, the proof is right there in the bible and in the changes that will happen when the time is right. Let this butterfly speak to you of a time of transformation that is surely coming.
See, my servant shall prosper;
he shall be exalted and lifted up,
and shall be very high.
Just as there were many who were astonished at him
—so marred was his appearance, beyond human semblance,
and his form beyond that of mortals—
so he shall startle many nations;
kings shall shut their mouths because of him;
for that which had not been told them they shall see,
and that which they had not heard they shall contemplate.
Amen
